Inserting Footnotes

From Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia

Inserting footnotes into a wiki article can be a bit tricky the first few times, but once you learn how, it is really quite simple. Below is a step-by-step guide to inserting a footnote into your article.

  1. In the body of your article, at the exact spot you would like the footnote reference to appear, insert the entire text of your footnote between "ref tags." It should look like this: <ref>Smith, Bob. ''Book About Jefferson.'' Chicago: Publishing Company, 1999.</ref> This may seem strange if you are accustomed to using Word or another word processing program to insert footnotes, but do not worry; even though the text of the footnote is typed into the body, it will actually appear at the bottom of the article.
  2. At the bottom of your article, create a Footnotes heading: type the word Footnotes, highlight it, and click the Level 2 headline shortcut button above the editing box.
  3. On the next line, type: <references/>

That is all you need! Be sure to adhere to Chicago Manual of Style when formulating your footnotes.
